Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a national coalition of non-governmental organizations, corporations, labor unions, religious groups, national and international agencies, academic institutions, professional associations and individuals — all with a deep commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. They have convened as a National Coordinating Committee for the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR50) because they recognize this important occasion as an opportunity not only to mark past achievements, but to advance the protection of human rights for everyone – everywhere.
Ambassador William J. vanden Heuvel, President of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute and former US Deputy Representative to the United Nations, serves as Chairman of the National Coordinating Committee for UDHR50. Felice D. Gaer, Director of the Jacob Blaustein Institute for Human Rights, chairs the UDHR50 Steering Committee. Our coalition is coordinating its efforts with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the office of the UN Secretary-General, the U.S. State Department and key Member States to the United Nations.
A Secretariat established by the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (and hosted by the United Nations Association of the USA) supports our coalition. Core funding is provided by the Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. On behalf of the coalition, this website was developed by the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute in partnership with “Human Rights USA” (an alliance of human rights educators and activists).
Together, members of the National Coordinating Committee have adopted an Action Agenda to mark the 50th anniversary. Please take time to explore this Agenda and get involved in activities that strengthen respect for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human rights are protected and promoted by human beings. The defense of human rights and freedoms is IN YOUR HANDS!
